Chapter Ten
Malcolm walked out of the doctor's office, holding a folder full of information, along with a script for a new heart medication. He had a decision to make soon—the doctor had recommended a procedure that might help him, assuming he could afford it. There would be a couple more visits for more tests before anything was set in stone, then after that, he'd have to decide to either go under the knife, or continue struggling long term with no end in sight.
There were some charitable options for him to pursue, but he didn't have high hopes. Most of the charities he knew of were designed to help people who had no insurance, or who fell under a certain income level. Malcolm had insurance, it just wasn't good enough, and he made plenty of money for a middle class person, he just had nothing left over after payments on his car, his student loans, and his credit cards. It put him in an unfortunate gray area, too financially stable to get help, too poor to afford the expensive surgery he needed.
He walked through the halls of the hospital, on his way back to the parking lot. It was a big place, with five different main sections. He was on completely the opposite side of the building from where he and Sarah had been when she was in the maternity ward. He would have swung by the maternity wing, but he knew that Devon was off work today. It was the night of the concert, and they had plans together.
He headed home to get changed. He didn't really own any fancy clothes for a high-class night out, so he just put on a pair of slacks and a button-down shirt. The shirt was a bit big; he hadn't worn it in awhile, since the last time he worked in an office. It seemed he'd lost a few pounds since then. He just hoped it didn't look too sloppy.
He paced around the apartment while he was waiting for Devon to come over and pick him up. Sarah sat on the couch, nursing Simon. She was still on maternity leave for a few more weeks.
“Sit down,” she said, shooting him an annoyed look. “You make me anxious when you pace around like that.”
“I'm just nervous.” Malcolm wiped his sweaty palms on his pants.
“Why? Haven't you guys already been out a few times?”
“Yeah, we have,” Malcolm said. He'd seen Devon several times over the last couple of weeks. Most of their dates, however, had been casual. Coffee, or lunch, or a movie. And things hadn't progressed much beyond some kissing and light touching. But tonight just felt like a bigger night. Like there was more pressure. “Tonight's just different, okay?”
“Ohhhh.” Sarah giggled at him, an amused sparkle in her eye. “Okay. Gotcha.” She winked.
“What's that supposed to mean?”
She pursed her lips at him. “I had a night I was nervous about, just like you are now. Then a few weeks later, I found out I was pregnant.
